What is Dream doing right now?
In late April 2025, Dream reinvented himself as a VTuber in the livestream “Dream 2.0”: instead of his face or mask, he now shows a 3D model of his “blob” mascot. In November 2025 he made a wrist injury public – a broken scaphoid bone that needed two operations; in the video “I might not ever play Minecraft again” he said he might never play Minecraft as well as he used to. Even so, he came back in 2026: his main channel has seen new Manhunt episodes (“Speedrunner VS 5 Hunters REVIVAL”, “VS 6 Hunters”, “Speedrunner Swap VS 3 Hunters”), a murder mystery video with ten YouTubers and the single “Adrenaline” with PmBata. Who is Dream?
Dream, whose real first name is Clay, was born on August 12, 1999, in the USA. His last name is not publicly known. He is one of the most successful and at the same time most controversial Minecraft YouTubers in the world. What sets him apart: Dream shaped Minecraft gaming with new formats such as Minecraft Manhunt and, with the Dream SMP, created one of the most influential roleplay servers in gaming history. Until October 2022 he stayed completely anonymous and always wore his signature green smiley mask.
The early years (2014–2019)
Dream created his YouTube channel on February 8, 2014, under the name “DreamTraps”, but only became really active in July 2019. His breakthrough came from his deep understanding of the YouTube algorithm. As Business Insider reported, Dream systematically studied how to optimize titles, keywords and thumbnails for maximum reach.
His first viral video came in July 2019, when he used reverse engineering to find the seed of PewDiePie’s Minecraft world. In November 2019 he followed up with “Minecraft, But Item Drops Are Random And Multiplied…”, which got more than 59 million views and sent his fame through the roof.
The face reveal (October 2, 2022)
For years, Dream stayed completely anonymous, wore his green smiley mask (the “blob”) and gave away nothing about how he looked. This anonymity became a central part of his brand.
On September 19, 2022, Dream announced that his next YouTube video would be his face reveal. On October 2, 2022, he posted the video “hi, I’m Dream.”, which got more than 21.9 million views and 2.5 million likes within 24 hours.
Dream explained that he wanted to show his face so he could meet friends in person, explore new content formats and do more work outside his home. Reactions were mixed – alongside excited fans there was also mockery and online bullying about his looks. In June 2023 Dream made the video private, but later made it public again. Since 2025 he has appeared as a VTuber.
Tech: VR and motion capture (2024–2025)
In 2024 Dream showed off a motion-capture system that lets real people control Minecraft characters with VR gear and tracking suits. He used it for videos such as:
- “Minecraft Speedrunner VS TITAN” (September 2024) – the hunters turned into giant titans
- “20 YouTubers VS Titan (In My Real Life House)” (December 2024) – his real house was rebuilt in Minecraft, 20 creators hid inside, and his dad hunted them as a titan
In April 2025 he took the step to becoming a VTuber in the livestream “Dream 2.0”.
Controversies
Dream’s career has been accompanied by several controversies that parents should know about:
- Speedrun cheating (2020/2021): In October 2020, Dream submitted a Minecraft speedrun to speedrun.com (5th place in “1.16+ Random Seed Glitchless”). Other speedrunners noticed unusually high drop rates. After a two-month investigation, the moderators removed the run on December 11, 2020: the odds of that much luck were at most 1 in 7.5 trillion. Dream first disputed this and commissioned a counter-analysis. On May 30, 2021, he admitted that he had unintentionally used a disallowed modification that changed drop rates.
- Allegations in 2022/2023: On X and in anonymous posts, Dream was accused of messaging minors inappropriately. Dream rejected all of the allegations in a long video in December 2023 and then stepped back from X for a while. There are no reports of an investigation or charges (Dexerto).
- Dispute with TommyInnit (2024/2025): Former Dream SMP member TommyInnit accused Dream of, among other things, harassing his mother and treating him badly when he was a teenager. Dream apologized for a meme containing a slur, denied the other accusations and asked Tommy to delete their joint videos (Dexerto).
Known projects & series
Minecraft Manhunt (since 2019)
Minecraft Manhunt is Dream’s best-known series. The concept: one player (usually Dream) tries to beat Minecraft and defeat the Ender Dragon while one or more “hunters” try to kill him. The hunters have compasses that point to Dream’s position and can respawn as often as they like. Dream only wins if he defeats the Ender Dragon before he dies.
The first video came out on December 26, 2019, titled “Beating Minecraft But My Friend Tries to Stop Me”. The series grew from one hunter to two, three, four and even five. Several Manhunt videos passed 100 million views, and one Manhunt finale ranked No. 7 among YouTube’s top trending videos of 2020 (USA). After a long break – the supposedly final video came out in February 2022 – Dream revived the series in 2026 with new episodes.
Music
Besides gaming, Dream also releases music:
- “Roadtrip” (February 4, 2021) – feat. PmBata, a chart hit in Canada
- “Mask” (May 20, 2021) – his most controversial song, criticized for the way it talks about medication; the animated music video was later deleted
- “Change My Clothes” (August 19, 2021) – feat. Alec Benjamin
- “Until I End Up Dead” (June 23, 2023) – his first song on a major label (Republic Records/Mercury Records)
- “Everest” (July 28, 2023) – feat. Yung Gravy
- “Adrenaline” (2026) – again with PmBata
On September 1, 2023, his debut EP “To Whoever Wants to Hear” came out with 7 tracks on Republic Records. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 173.
Awards and records
- Streamy Awards: Gaming 2020 and 2021, Gamer 2023
- The Game Awards 2021: Content Creator of the Year
- Guinness World Records (August 2022): most subscribers for a dedicated Minecraft channel and most-viewed Minecraft gameplay video
- YouTube Rewind 2020 lists: No. 7 “Top Trending Video”, No. 2 “Top Creator”, No. 1 “Breakout Creator”
Dream SMP: the roleplay server
In April 2020, Dream and GeorgeNotFound founded the Dream SMP (Survival Multiplayer) – a private Minecraft server that would make gaming history.
Invited creators such as TommyInnit, Technoblade, Wilbur Soot, Sapnap and many more played on the server. What made it special was the roleplay: big events were loosely scripted in advance, while most of it happened live and improvised – streamed on YouTube and Twitch.
Wired described the Dream SMP as a form of live theater. In January 2021, more than 1 million people watched Dream SMP livestreams at the same time. A huge fan culture with fan art and fan fiction grew up around the server. The Dream SMP shut down in 2023 after interest from viewers and creators had dropped.
Dream’s gaming setup
There is no reliable information about Dream's current setup.
Dream has never listed his mouse, keyboard or PC himself in a video description or setup video. Setup lists online don’t cite a verifiable source – so we don’t repeat them.
Merch
Dream’s official merch shop is dream.shop, with clothing and accessories featuring the “blob” smiley. As with any creator shop: it’s a good idea to talk to younger fans about prices and budgets first.
Friends, crew & collabs
Dream is part of the “Dream Team” with his closest friends GeorgeNotFound (George Davidson) and Sapnap (Nicholas “Nick”). The three live together in Orlando, Florida, and regularly create content together.
Another important figure was Technoblade (who died in 2022), with whom Dream had a friendly rivalry. Both were considered the “best Minecraft players” and faced each other in several events. Dream worked with MrBeast on the Dream Burger (April 2021), among other things, and other YouTubers regularly join his current Manhunt and murder mystery videos.
Charity: Dream has supported good causes several times – for example a fundraiser for the youth crisis organization The Trevor Project (June 2021, around $140,000 together with fans and the Dream Team) and a donation of more than $21,000 to cancer research after Technoblade’s diagnosis (August 2021).
Private life
Dream lives in Orlando, Florida, with Sapnap and GeorgeNotFound. He has talked publicly about his ADHD diagnosis and taught himself to code. His cat Patches even has her own X account with lots of followers. For his motion-capture videos he uses a large studio in a converted basketball court.
Income & net worth
Dream earns money from several sources:
- YouTube ads on his main channel and second channels
- Sponsorships & brand deals, e.g. the Dream Burger with MrBeast Burger (April 2021)
- Merchandise via dream.shop
- Twitch: subscriptions and donations during livestreams
- Music: streaming income and a record deal with Republic Records (since December 2022)
There are no reliable figures on his income or net worth – neither Wikipedia nor major media outlets give solid numbers. Amounts on estimate sites are extrapolated from view counts and aren’t facts.
Is Dream kid-friendly?
- Recommended age
- 12+
- Language
- occasional swearing
- livestreams with live chat
- past controversies
- merch promotion and calls to buy
- doesn't show his face
Exciting Minecraft Manhunts with little swearing. Dream has been involved in several controversies (a speedrun cheating case, allegations he denies) – best talked through together.
What works for kids
- Minecraft content: creative, exciting and entertaining
- Manhunt videos: action-packed, but without realistic violence (Minecraft context)
- Language: Dream rarely swears in his edited videos
- Positives: teamwork, strategy, coding and tech
What parents should watch for
- Controversies: older kids will know about the speedrun cheating and the allegations from 2022–2025 (which Dream denies) – it’s good to talk about them together
- Fan culture: the Dream community is very intense and has been criticized several times for attacking critics; keep an eye on how your child interacts with the community
- Parasocial relationships: the long anonymity, the face reveal and the VTuber model can encourage strong attachments to the creator
- Music: the song “Mask” deals with medication in a controversial way
Does Dream swear? Rarely in his edited videos. In livestreams and older content, the language can occasionally get cruder.
Did Dream show his face? Yes – in October 2022. Since 2025, though, he mostly appears as his animated blob VTuber model.
Recommendation for parents: The Minecraft videos are a good fit from around 12; a bit earlier if you watch together. For younger kids, pick individual Manhunt videos and put the controversies in context.
