What Is the Feather Client in Minecraft?
If you’ve been looking for a fast, lightweight Minecraft client, you’ve probably come across the Feather Client. It was one of the best-known free clients for Minecraft Java – with millions of users, more than 40 built-in mods and the option to add your own Forge and Fabric mods.
Important, as of October 2026: Feather Client no longer exists in this form. After an ad scandal in April 2026, server operator InPvP took over the technology and user base and renamed the client Dawn. If you launch Feather, it updates to Dawn automatically. Here you’ll find out what made Feather special, what changes with Dawn and what parents should look out for.
Feather Client at a glance
| Feather (until mid-2026) | Dawn (successor) | |
|---|---|---|
| Operator | SilentStack, Inc. | InPvP |
| Cost | free, cosmetics/store optional | free, store optional |
| Built-in mods | more than 40 (e.g. FPS display, Keystrokes, ToggleSprint) | more than 100 modules (incl. voice chat, waypoints, HUD, zoom) |
| Your own mods | Forge and Fabric | mods and modpacks via a Modrinth browser |
| Server hosting | free from your own PC (Feather Server) | free via Aternos |
| Systems | Windows, macOS | Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon), Linux (experimental) |
| Download | feathermc.com (redirects to Dawn) | dawn.gg |
What could the Feather Client do?
Feather’s main goal was to make Minecraft run more smoothly, even on weaker PCs, while bundling lots of convenience features:
- More than 40 built-in mods: FPS display, Keystrokes (shows your key presses), ToggleSprint, zoom and many small helpers that you could switch on and off individually.
- HUD editor: place displays such as FPS or coordinates anywhere on screen.
- Mod manager: enable or disable your own Forge and Fabric mods in one click, without copying files into the Minecraft folder. How it works without a client is shown in How to install Minecraft mods.
- Skin manager: switch skins right in the launcher.
- Shaders: shader packs could be used – more in How to install a texture pack or shader pack.
Feather Server: your own server inside the client
The best-known feature was Feather Server: you could host a Minecraft server for free on your own PC. No port forwarding on your router was needed, and your IP address stayed hidden behind Feather’s proxy network.
The catch: the server only ran while your PC was on, and your friends also needed Feather to join. If you want more freedom with plugins and mods or need a server that runs around the clock, a hosting provider is the better choice (for example Apex Hosting). You’ll find a comparison in Minecraft server hosting compared.
In Dawn, an Aternos integration replaces this feature: you create and manage free Aternos servers right in the launcher, view logs, run commands and install mods. If a Dawn player joins your server while it’s switched off, it starts automatically. Aternos also works without Dawn, though.
From Feather to Dawn: what happened in 2026
- April 26, 2026: YouTuber CalebIsSalty publishes a video accusing Feather of loading and refreshing ads in the launcher even when the window was minimized or invisible, which would have artificially inflated ad revenue.
- April 27, 2026: Store platform Tebex, which many Minecraft servers and projects use to sell items, says after its own review that it finds the allegations credible and ends its partnership with Feather.
- April 29, 2026: Feather rejects any fraud allegation: ads don’t run when the launcher is minimized or closed, and how ads are measured and billed is decided by the ad platforms.
- May 21, 2026: InPvP announces the takeover. It bought the technology and user base, not the company itself.
- June 25, 2026: The switchover begins. On launch, Feather updates to Dawn; accounts, cosmetics, instances, mods and settings carry over.
No independent body has yet established whether the allegations are true. Dawn is also the official launcher of the PvP server MCPVP; tournaments there require the launcher.
How to get the client today (Dawn)
- Open dawn.gg and download the launcher for your system (Windows, macOS with Apple Silicon, Linux as Flatpak or tarball).
- Install and start the launcher.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java.
- Create a profile for the Minecraft version you want and start the game.
If you still have Feather installed, you don’t need to do anything: it updates to Dawn automatically the next time you start it, and you can import your Feather mod profiles.
Feather/Dawn compared with Lunar and Badlion
| Client | Strengths | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Feather / Dawn | lots of modules, your own mods and modpacks, server hosting via Aternos | players who want to play with friends on their own servers |
| Lunar Client | very widespread, more than 65 mods, free with a cosmetics shop | PvP on big servers like Hypixel |
| Badlion Client | long-established PvP client | PvP players |
| NoRisk Client | German client, Fabric-based, Hosted Worlds, open launcher code | current versions with your own mods |

For parents: Is it safe?
Feather (now Dawn) is not an official product of Mojang or Microsoft. Downloaded from the official site, the launcher is not a virus. There are a few things you should know, though:
- Ads in the launcher: Feather was funded by ads in the launcher – that’s exactly what the scandal was about. The website doesn’t say explicitly whether and how Dawn shows ads. Take a look at the launcher together with your child.
- New operator: the takeover changed who is responsible. Read the privacy policy on dawn.gg if needed; data and accounts were carried over from Feather.
- Official downloads only: download Dawn only from dawn.gg. Old Feather installers from other sites or “Feather” modpacks on third-party sites are not the original.
- Contact with strangers: voice chat, your own servers and PvP tournaments mean contact with other players. Agree on who your child plays with and whether voice chat is allowed.
- Purchases: the client is free; the store sells cosmetics (Java only). Agree on a limit beforehand.
- Age rating: Minecraft itself is rated USK 6 in Germany, PEGI 7 in Europe and the UK, and ESRB E10+ in the US. The client has no rating of its own.
If this all feels too complicated: Mojang’s regular Minecraft Launcher is perfectly enough for most kids.
Frequently asked questions
Does Feather Client still exist?
Not under that name. Minecraft server operator InPvP took over Feather’s technology and user base in May 2026 and continues the client as Dawn. Since June 25, 2026, Feather installations have been switched over to Dawn step by step.
What is Dawn?
Dawn is the successor to Feather Client: a free launcher and client for Minecraft Java by InPvP, with profiles, mod and modpack management, more than 100 modules and free server hosting through Aternos. Download it at dawn.gg.
Is Feather Client free?
Yes, Feather and now Dawn are free. Only optional extras such as cosmetics from the store cost money. You still need a Minecraft Java account.
What was the Feather scandal?
In April 2026, YouTuber CalebIsSalty accused Feather of loading ads in the launcher in the background, artificially inflating ad revenue. Feather rejected the fraud allegation; the store platform Tebex ended its partnership anyway. The allegation has not been proven.
Can you create your own server with Feather Client?
Feather offered free hosting straight from your own PC, protected by a proxy network. In Dawn this now runs through Aternos: you create and manage Aternos servers in the launcher, and when a Dawn player joins, the server starts automatically.
Conclusion
Feather Client was a popular free Minecraft client with lots of built-in mods and an easy way to run your own server. Since summer 2026 it has been called Dawn and belongs to InPvP; mods, cosmetics and settings have moved over, and server hosting now runs through Aternos. If you’re looking for a lightweight client with your own mods, you can keep using Dawn. Parents should know about the 2026 ad dispute and set up the launcher together with their child once. Good alternatives are Lunar, Badlion or the German NoRisk Client.
