Plugins and Mods for Your Minecraft Server

Simply explained - what are Minecraft plugins and what are Minecraft mods

If you’ve been playing Minecraft for a while, you’ve surely come across terms like plugins and mods. Both expand the game – but they work in different ways and need different server software. Here you’ll find out what the difference is, which software you need, which plugins are worth it in October 2026 and what to watch out for when downloading.

In short: Plugins run only on the server, so your friends don’t need to install anything. Mods change the game itself and usually have to be installed on the server and by every player. Both exist only for the Java Edition – the current version is Minecraft Java 26.3 (the “Wilderness Bound” update, released on September 15, 2026).

Plugins – the helpers for servers

Plugins are add-ons that you install on a Minecraft server. They change or expand the gameplay without players needing any extra files. That way you can add things like minigames, economy systems, teleport commands or protection for plots of land – all on the server side.

Plugins run on server software that supports the so-called Bukkit interface: mainly Paper, Purpur and Spigot. For you that means: set up the server, drop in the plugins, done – your friends join with their completely normal Minecraft.

Mods – the big game changers

Mods (short for “modifications”) go one step further. They change the actual game and add new blocks, items, creatures, dimensions or entire game mechanics. For that you need a mod loader – these days mainly Fabric or NeoForge, while the older Forge is still around too. How to install mods on your own computer is explained in our guide to installing mods.

Important: if a mod adds new content, every player needs the same mod in the same version. There are also server-only mods (for example for better performance) that run just on the server.

The difference at a glance

PluginsMods

Both are .jar files – but a plugin won’t work on a Fabric server, and a mod won’t work on a Paper server.

Which server software do you need?

Before you install plugins or mods, you choose your server software. The most important ones at a glance (all free, as of October 2026):

SoftwareWhat for?Current Minecraft version
Vanilla (Mojang’s official server)no plugins or mods26.3
Paperthe standard for plugin servers: fast, fixes bugs, runs almost all Bukkit/Spigot plugins26.3
Purpurbuilds on Paper, lots of extra settings26.3
SpigotPaper’s predecessor, still available26.3
FoliaPaper variant for very large servers; many plugins do not run on it26.3
Fabriclightweight mod loader, lots of performance and tech mods26.3
NeoForgemod loader for big content mods and modpacks26.3
Forgeolder mod loader, still maintained; many older modpacks need it26.3
Velocityproxy that links several servers into a networkits own versions (4.2.0)

Paper is by far the most widespread: according to the plugin statistics service bStats, around 74% of tracked plugin servers run Paper, followed by Purpur (9%) and Spigot (6%). What exactly makes Paper better is covered in our article What Paper does for your Minecraft server.

Tip for friends on phones or consoles: With the Geyser plugin, Bedrock Edition players – on phone, tablet, Xbox, PlayStation or Switch – can join your Java server too. On Modrinth, Geyser has 1.50M downloads. The add-on plugin Floodgate means they don’t need their own Java account to do so. We explain more about the differences between the two versions in Minecraft Bedrock vs. Java.

Where to download plugins and mods

Only download add-ons from well-known platforms or directly from the developer:

  • Hangar – PaperMC’s plugin portal, recommended for Paper servers.
  • Modrinth – plugins, mods and modpacks; shows clearly which Minecraft version and which software is supported.
  • SpigotMC – the oldest large plugin collection.
  • CurseForge – mainly mods and modpacks.
  • GitHub – many projects publish their downloads there as well.

On the project page, always check three things: supported Minecraft version, supported server software (Paper, Fabric…) and date of the last update.

The current Minecraft version is 26.3. If the table shows an older number, it’s best to wait with your server update until the plugin has caught up.

ViaVersion and ViaBackwards

ViaVersion and ViaBackwards let players with different game versions play together on one server. ViaVersion lets newer clients connect to an older server. ViaBackwards (which needs ViaVersion) additionally lets older clients join a newer server. Handy when not all your friends update right away. Both run on Paper, Folia, Velocity, BungeeCord, Sponge and even Fabric.

EssentialsX

EssentialsX is the basic toolkit for many servers: teleports, homes, kits, warps, a simple economy, chat formatting and moderation commands. According to the developers, version 2.22.0 closes several item duplication and server crash exploits – so updating is worth it. Officially this version supports Minecraft 1.21.11 and 26.1.2. If your server runs a newer version, check the project page for newer (development) builds before you update.

LuckPerms

LuckPerms is the most widely used permission system for Minecraft servers. You create groups (for example “Player”, “Builder”, “Moderator”) and decide exactly who can use which commands – via commands or a clear web editor. LuckPerms is available for Paper, Spigot, Folia, Velocity, BungeeCord and even Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.

WorldEdit

WorldEdit is the standard tool for fast building and editing: fill large areas, copy and paste buildings, generate shapes, undo mistakes. Ideal for building projects, lobbies and maps. WorldEdit is available as a plugin and as a mod (Fabric, NeoForge).

Vault

Vault is an interface between plugins: it connects, for example, a shop plugin to EssentialsX’s economy or a chat plugin to LuckPerms. Vault itself adds no features for players, but many plugins require it. The latest version (1.7.3) dates from 2020 – because Vault is only an interface, it usually still works. If you want a maintained alternative, VaultUnlocked is a compatible successor that is regularly updated for new versions.

PlaceholderAPI

PlaceholderAPI provides placeholders that other plugins use to show dynamic information – such as player name, balance, rank or online count in scoreboards, tab lists and chat messages. Many scoreboard and chat plugins need it.

https://modrinth.com/plugin/placeholderapi

WorldGuard

WorldGuard (requires WorldEdit) protects areas of your world: spawn, lobby or houses can no longer be destroyed, and you decide where PvP, fire or explosions are allowed. On servers with younger players in particular, this prevents a lot of arguments about “griefing”.

https://modrinth.com/plugin/worldguard

CoreProtect

CoreProtect logs who broke or placed which block, or took what from a chest, and when – and can roll back damage selectively. A very good tool against griefing on friends’ and family servers.

For comparison, here are the most downloaded server plugins on Modrinth. Modrinth also counts projects that are available as mods too – voice chat or map add-ons, for example, which run on both the server and the player’s PC. So check each entry to see whether it’s really offered as a plugin for Paper or Spigot.

To keep cheaters out, there are also dedicated anti-cheat plugins – we show you how to install one in How to install an anti-cheat plugin.

How to install a plugin

  1. Make a backup: First back up your world and your config files.
  2. Download the plugin: On the project page, pick the version that matches your Minecraft version and Paper/Spigot. The file must end in .jar.
  3. Put it in the folder: Copy the .jar file into your server’s plugins folder. On a rented server, use your host’s web panel or SFTP.
  4. Restart the server: No /reload – a real restart is safer.
  5. Check: Type /plugins in-game or in the console. If the plugin shows in green, it’s running. If it’s red, look in the logs/latest.log file – it usually says what’s missing (for example a required plugin like Vault).

Mods are installed differently: on a Fabric or NeoForge server they go into the mods folder, and your fellow players need the same mods in their launcher. The easiest way is to use ready-made modpacks via the CurseForge app or the Modrinth App.

Safety: only use trusted sources

Plugins and mods are programs. According to the PaperMC documentation, a plugin has unrestricted access to your server and the computer it runs on – and a mod on your PC does too. Real cases show this isn’t just a theoretical risk:

  • Fractureiser (2023): Attackers took over accounts on CurseForge and Bukkit and uploaded infected updates of well-known mods and plugins. The malware stole browser passwords as well as Discord, Microsoft and Minecraft credentials, among other things.
  • Fake mods on GitHub (2025): Security researchers at Check Point discovered hundreds of GitHub projects posing as Minecraft mods (mainly cheat tools) that installed password stealers – on more than 1,500 devices, according to the researchers.

How to protect yourself:

  • Only download from Hangar, Modrinth, SpigotMC, CurseForge or the official project page – never via links from YouTube comments, Discord DMs or “free premium plugin” sites.
  • No “leaked” premium plugins: paid plugins that pop up for free somewhere are a common route for malware.
  • Pay attention to download counts, ratings, linked source code and the last update.
  • Only install as many plugins as you need and keep them up to date.
  • Don’t run the server on the family PC with all your private data – use a server host or a separate device instead.

For parents: If your child runs their own server, check together where the files come from. A good rule of thumb: if it’s not on one of the big platforms, it doesn’t get installed.

Mods and plugins together?

Many people wonder whether you can use mods and plugins at the same time – and the answer is: only to a limited extent. Mods run on Fabric, NeoForge or Forge, plugins on Paper, Purpur or Spigot. These systems are built differently under the hood.

There are so-called hybrid servers that combine both:

  • Arclight, according to its own overview, actively supports Minecraft 1.21.11 (NeoForge and Fabric) and 1.21.1 (Forge, NeoForge, Fabric) – so not the latest version.
  • Youer from the MohistMC team is a NeoForge server with the Paper API.
  • Mohist, once the best-known option, has been discontinued (“end of life”): updates are paused.

Hybrid servers lag behind the current versions, and not every plugin runs on them. Test your setup thoroughly before you let friends onto the server – or pick one side. Many features you used to need plugins for (permissions, WorldEdit, Bedrock access via Geyser) are now also available as Fabric or NeoForge mods.

Cool modpacks to try

Modpacks are ready-made mod collections that you install with one click in the CurseForge launcher. Pay attention to the Minecraft version – many popular packs run on older versions:

ModpackVersionWhat’s it about?
GTA V CraftForge, Minecraft 1.16.5a GTA-style city with cars and weapons – GTA V itself is rated 18 (PEGI) / M (ESRB), so it’s better suited to older teens
RLCraftForge, Minecraft 1.12.2 (last update June 2023)an extremely hard survival adventure with dragons
Cisco’s Adventure RPG UltimateForge, Minecraft 1.19.2a fantasy role-playing game with dungeons and bosses

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between plugins and mods in Minecraft?

Plugins run only on the server (Paper, Purpur, Spigot) and players don’t need to install anything. Mods change the game itself and run on a mod loader such as Fabric, NeoForge or Forge. If a mod adds new blocks, items or creatures, every player usually needs to have it installed too.

Can you use plugins and mods on the same server?

Only with so-called hybrid servers such as Arclight or Youer. They often lag behind the latest Minecraft versions, and not every plugin runs on them. Mohist, once the best-known option, is no longer being developed. For most servers it’s simpler to pick one side.

Where can I download Minecraft plugins safely?

Your best bets are Hangar (PaperMC’s plugin portal), Modrinth, SpigotMC or the project’s own GitHub page. Plugins have full access to the server and the computer, so never install files from YouTube comments, Discord messages or unknown download sites.

Which server software is best for plugins?

For most servers, Paper is the best choice: fast, well maintained and compatible with almost all Bukkit and Spigot plugins. According to bStats, around three quarters of all tracked plugin servers run Paper. Purpur builds on Paper and adds extra settings.

Do my friends need the plugins on their PC too?

No. You install plugins once, on the server. Your friends connect with their normal Minecraft (Java Edition) and don’t have to download anything extra.

Conclusion

Plugins and mods are powerful tools, but they serve different purposes: plugins expand a server without your fellow players having to install anything – mods change the game itself. For a server with friends, Paper with a handful of well-maintained plugins is almost always the easiest start. If you want new blocks, creatures and worlds, go for Fabric or NeoForge and a modpack. And whatever you choose: only download from trusted sources, keep everything up to date and make a backup before every change.
