How Does the Copper Golem Work in Minecraft?
Please note: the video above is in German.
The Copper Golem is a small, friendly helper made of copper that sorts items: it takes things out of copper chests and puts them away in the matching wooden chests. It can’t fight, but it ages like real copper, turns green and eventually freezes into a statue – unless you wax it with a honeycomb first. Here you’ll find out how to build one, exactly how it works, and how to set up a simple sorting room for it.
What is the Copper Golem?
The Copper Golem is a peaceful mob that arrived with “The Copper Age” game drop in autumn 2025 – in Java Edition with version 1.21.9 and in Bedrock Edition with version 1.21.111. The idea is older: it was already up for election in the 2021 Mob Vote but lost to the Allay back then. Today it’s a permanent part of both editions, including the current versions Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 (as of October 2026).
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Behavior | passive, never attacks |
| Health | 12 (6 hearts) |
| Job | sorting items from copper chests into wooden chests |
| Carries | up to 16 items of one kind at a time |
| On death | drops copper ingots (1–3, more with Looting in Java) |
| Oxidation | 4 stages, each about 21–23 Minecraft days |
How to build a Copper Golem
- Collect copper ingots. You’ll often find copper ore in caves, especially in dripstone caves. Smelt the raw copper into ingots in a furnace.
- Craft a block of copper. 9 copper ingots make one block of copper at the crafting table. Any oxidation stage works, even a waxed block.
- Prepare a pumpkin. Use shears on a pumpkin to get a carved pumpkin. A jack o’lantern works too.
- Place the copper block and put the pumpkin on top as the last step. The pumpkin has to be placed last – by you, a dispenser or even an enderman.
- Done: the golem appears where the pumpkin was, and the copper block turns into a copper chest. If a matching copper chest is already next to it, the two combine into a large chest.
Important: even if you use a waxed copper block, the golem and chest are not waxed afterwards. You craft more copper chests at the crafting table: a regular chest in the middle with 8 copper ingots around it.
How the Copper Golem sorts
The golem always works in the same loop:
- With empty hands, it looks for the nearest copper chest, opens it and takes up to 16 of the first item it finds.
- With full hands, it looks for the nearest regular chest or trapped chest. It only drops the items there if the chest is empty or already contains the same item.
- It needs about 3 seconds per chest. It remembers which chests it has already checked. After searching 10 chests without success, it wanders around for 7 seconds, forgets its list and starts again.
What the golem can’t do:
- It doesn’t use barrels, ender chests, shulker boxes or minecarts with chests – only copper chests (source) and regular or trapped chests (target).
- It only tells items apart by their type, not by enchantments, durability, name or contents. In Java Edition, for example, it can’t tell different potions apart; in Bedrock Edition it can.
- It searches an area of about 32 blocks in every direction and 8 blocks up and down. But it can’t open chests that are more than 1 block above or 2 blocks below it.
- If it’s on a lead, it doesn’t sort.
What else it can do: open and close wooden doors and other doors except iron doors. And if an iron golem holds out a poppy to it, it takes the flower and puts it on the lightning rod on its head. You can take it off again with shears.
Plan: a simple sorting room
Here’s how to get a working storage system quickly, without any redstone:
- Place a copper chest as the “input”. Throw everything you want sorted into it.
- Set up target chests in a row next to it, all at the same height as the copper chest. Put one item of the kind that should go there into each chest – for example a cobblestone, a log, a carrot.
- Keep the golem in – with a fence or walls around the storage room, so it doesn’t wander off and find chests elsewhere.
- Make sure there’s light, so no mobs spawn in the storage room.
- Add an empty chest as a leftovers box. Everything that doesn’t have its own chest yet ends up there.
Tip: because the golem accepts empty chests as targets, it fills up empty chests first. So put a “sample item” into every target chest right away, or your system will quickly get muddled.
Oxidation: the golem turns green
Like real copper, the golem gets a green patina over time. This happens in four stages:
| Stage | Appearance | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | shiny copper-colored | about 21–23 Minecraft days |
| Exposed | first green spots | about 21–23 Minecraft days |
| Weathered | mostly green | about 21–23 Minecraft days |
| Oxidized | completely green | stays that way – or turns into a statue |
The clock keeps running even when you’re far away. The more oxidized it is, the dimmer its eyes glow.
What you can do about it:
- Waxing with a honeycomb: use a honeycomb on the golem. Once waxed, it stops oxidizing and never turns into a statue.
- Scraping with an axe: each use removes the wax or one oxidation stage.
- Lightning: if lightning strikes an unwaxed golem, it also loses an oxidation stage.
The Copper Golem statue
When the golem is fully oxidized and not waxed, it can freeze into a statue at any time. It takes one of four random poses – standing, sitting, running or “star” with arms spread – and drops whatever it is carrying (including the poppy). The statue keeps any name from a name tag.
Statues make nice decorations, and a redstone comparator can read their pose as a signal. If you want your helper back, scrape the statue stage by stage with an axe. If you use the axe on the unoxidized statue, the golem comes back to life.
A tip for parents
The Copper Golem is a harmless, cute mob with no fighting or scary elements. For kids it’s a great introduction to “automation”: they learn that a system has rules (empty chest or same item type, chests at the right height) and that you have to look for the mistake when it doesn’t work. Terms like “mob” or “spawning” are explained in Minecraft terms every parent should know.
Frequently asked questions
How do you build a Copper Golem in Minecraft?
Place a block of copper and put a carved pumpkin or a jack o’lantern on top as the last step. The golem appears where the pumpkin was, and the copper block turns into a copper chest.
What does the Copper Golem do?
The Copper Golem sorts items. It takes up to 16 of one item from a copper chest and puts them into a regular chest or trapped chest that is either empty or already contains that item. It cannot fight.
Why is my Copper Golem not sorting?
Common reasons: the target containers are barrels or ender chests, which it doesn’t use; the chests are more than one block above or two blocks below it; no target chest is empty or already holds the same item; or the golem is on a lead. If it finds nothing after 10 chests, it wanders around briefly and then starts searching again.
How do you stop a Copper Golem from oxidizing?
Use a honeycomb on the golem. Once waxed, it no longer oxidizes and can’t turn into a statue. You can remove the wax again with an axe.
How do you get a Copper Golem back from a statue?
Scrape the statue with an axe until it is copper-colored again. Each use removes one oxidation stage. If you use the axe on the unoxidized statue, the golem comes back to life.
When was the Copper Golem added?
The Copper Golem arrived with “The Copper Age” game drop in autumn 2025: in Java Edition with version 1.21.9 and in Bedrock Edition with version 1.21.111.
Conclusion
The Copper Golem isn’t a fighter, it’s a tidy-up helper: a copper chest as the input, a few wooden chests with sample items next to it, and it keeps your storage in order by itself. Remember the honeycomb if you want it to keep working – otherwise, after a good 60 Minecraft days (around 22 hours of play), it will eventually end up as a green statue in your storage room. The good news: you can bring it back any time with an axe.
