How to Build a Creeper Farm in Minecraft 1.21
Note: the video above is in German.
A Creeper farm gives you a steady supply of gunpowder – for TNT, Firework Rockets to fly with an Elytra, and Splash Potions. The farm in the video by German YouTuber Flash is made of a round spawning platform above the ocean, a ceiling of trapdoors, water channels and Soul Campfires. Here you’ll find out which materials you need, how to build the farm step by step, why the trapdoor trick works and whether the farm still runs in the current version of Minecraft.
Does the Farm Still Work in Minecraft 26.3?
In Java Edition: yes. The title says “1.21” because the farm and the video date from that time. Since then, Minecraft has switched to a new version numbering. As of October 2026, the current Java Edition is 26.3 “Wilderness Bound”, released on September 15, 2026; the matching Bedrock Edition version is 26.50. According to the Minecraft Wiki, nothing has changed about how Creepers spawn, how big they are or how trapdoors behave. So the farm works just as shown.
In Bedrock Edition: not in this form. The heart of the farm, the trapdoor ceiling, only filters out larger monsters in Java Edition. More on that in the comparison below.
What You Need Gunpowder For
| Item | Recipe | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| TNT | 5 gunpowder + 4 sand | Blasting, traps, mining |
| Firework Rocket | 1 paper + 1–3 gunpowder | Boosting while flying with an Elytra |
| Splash Potion | finished potion + 1 gunpowder at the brewing stand | Throwing potions at others |
| Fire Charge | blaze powder + coal + gunpowder | Lighting fires, dispenser ammo |
If you fly a lot with an Elytra, you’ll burn through several stacks of rockets quickly. That’s exactly when a farm pays off.
How Creepers Spawn
Creepers are Overworld monsters. To make a farm work, you need to know their spawn rules (Minecraft Wiki: Mob spawning):
- Darkness: In the Overworld, monsters only spawn where the light from blocks (torches, lanterns) is 0. That’s why the platform has to be fully covered – then the farm even runs during the day.
- Distance from you: In Java Edition, monsters only spawn between 24 and 128 blocks away from you. A monster more than 128 blocks away despawns instantly.
- Mob cap: There’s a maximum number of monsters at once (Java: 70 as the base value). Every monster in a nearby cave takes a slot away from the farm.
- Ground: Creepers need a solid, full block below them. Monsters don’t spawn on glass, trapdoors, carpet or leaves.
- Biomes: Creepers spawn in almost all Overworld biomes, but not in Mushroom Fields or the Deep Dark.
- Difficulty: On Peaceful, no monsters spawn at all.
This gives you the farm’s basic idea: it sits above the ocean, where there are hardly any other dark areas, and you wait high up above it. That way Creepers spawn on your platform rather than in caves on the seabed.
The Trapdoor Trick
In Java Edition a Creeper is 1.7 blocks tall, a Zombie 1.95 and a Skeleton 1.99 blocks. If you put a layer of trapdoors on top of a 2-block-high spawning space, only 1 13/16 blocks (about 1.81) of headroom remain. A Creeper fits, but Zombies, Skeletons, Witches and Endermen don’t. Spiders are flat but wide: a carpet pattern on the floor, with two empty blocks between each carpet, deals with them. Nothing spawns on the carpet itself, and there’s no longer room for a Spider.
Materials List
Flash briefly shows the materials on screen in the video. Exact amounts depend on how big you make the platform. For the farm at its original size you’ll need roughly:
| Material | Amount | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Building blocks (e.g. cobblestone) | several stacks | Platform, walls, ceiling |
| Trapdoors | several hundred | Ceiling above the spawning platform and drop openings |
| Carpet (any color) | about 50 | Spider-proofing |
| Water buckets | a few | Water channels to the center |
| Fence gates | 9 | Holding water in the collection area |
| Hoppers | 9 | Collecting the gunpowder |
| Chests | 6 (3 double chests) | Storage |
| Soul Campfires | 9 | Killing the Creepers |
| Slabs, fences, buttons, a bed | a few | Center section, buttons to stop spawns at the edge |
| Snow blocks + carved pumpkins | 8 + 4 | Four Snow Golems |
| Ladders | about 115 | Route to the AFK spot |
| Torches | a few | Lighting up the roof |
Step-by-Step Building Guide
- Pick a spot: Build the farm above an ocean, as far away from land and caves as possible.
- Collection station: Build a small platform and place 3 double chests next to it. Above them go 9 hoppers in a 3×3 square, three pointing into each chest. That way every item ends up in storage, no matter which hopper it lands on.
- Water basin: Put a border around the hoppers, extend a small cross two blocks out in every direction and wall it in. Place 9 fence gates (opened) and pour water into the corners so everything flows to the center. Raise the wall by two blocks so nothing falls out.
- Center section: On top comes a 5×5 area with slabs around the edge and a bed in the middle with fences around it. Place buttons on the outside, where nothing can spawn. Cover the openings above the water with opened trapdoors: Creepers think they’re solid ground, walk onto them and fall into the water.
- Round spawning platform: From the center, go 11 blocks outward in every direction and connect the points into a circle (Flash counts out the pattern in the video). Fill in the whole disc. We also show how to build clean circles in How to Make a Perfect Circle in Minecraft.
- Carpets: Lay out the carpet pattern – one carpet, then two empty blocks, in every direction.
- Wall: Build a wall two blocks high all the way around so the Creepers can’t walk off the platform.
- Snow Golems: Build four Snow Golems (two snow blocks stacked, a carved pumpkin on top) and knock them onto the platform, one per side. They throw snowballs at the Creepers. These do no damage, but they push the Creepers toward the openings.
- Ceiling: Cover the whole platform with trapdoors (except for the center area) and place a block on top of each trapdoor. This is the most time-consuming step.
- Killing area: Down in the collection area, place 9 Soul Campfires. They deal twice as much damage as regular campfires and don’t destroy items. The hoppers below pull the gunpowder into the chests.
- AFK spot: From the center, go 115 blocks up, build yourself a small, safe platform there and a ladder down. Light up the farm’s roof with torches so no Creepers spawn on top.
Then all that’s left is to wait up top. In the video, there are already more than five stacks of gunpowder in the chests after about two minutes. How much you get depends on how free the surrounding area is of caves and land.
Java vs. Bedrock
| Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Trapdoor trick against Zombies/Skeletons | works | doesn’t work |
| Spawn distance from the player | 24–128 blocks | 24–44 blocks (simulation distance 4), further from 6 up |
| Mob cap | 70 monsters (base value) | own limits per area, max. 5 Creepers on the surface |
| Creepers spawn | in groups of up to 4 | individually |
| Biomes without Creepers | Mushroom Fields, Deep Dark | also Rivers, Frozen Rivers, Snowy Plains |
The bottom line for Bedrock players: the farm in the video is built for Java Edition, and the title says so too. For Bedrock you need a guide that has been specifically tested in Bedrock. We explain where the differences between the editions come from in All Minecraft Editions for PC and Consoles.
Common Mistakes
- Waiting too close to the farm: Nothing spawns within 24 blocks. Stay up on the AFK platform.
- Gaps in the ceiling: A single gap that lets light in is enough to stop spawns in that spot.
- Unlit roof: Creepers then spawn on top of the farm and blow it up.
- Caves nearby: They eat up the mob cap. An ocean without many underwater caves is ideal.
- Snow Golem in water: Snow Golems take damage in water and rain. Keep them on the dry platform.
Tip for Parents
A Creeper farm is a big project that teaches kids a lot about rules and planning: why does something spawn here but not there? It isn’t dangerous in the game, because the Creepers explode down in the killing area, where nothing can get damaged. The gunpowder can quickly turn into TNT, though. On shared servers, that can lead to arguments when someone blows up other players’ builds. Talk about what’s allowed beforehand. We explain terms like “spawning” or “AFK” in Minecraft Terms for Parents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Creeper farm still work in Minecraft 26.3?
Yes, in Java Edition. The rules for how Creepers spawn and the trapdoor trick haven’t changed since 1.21, so the farm from the video also works in Java 26.3 “Wilderness Bound”.
Does the Creeper farm work in Bedrock Edition?
Not in this form. The trapdoor trick that filters out Zombies and Skeletons only works in Java Edition. Bedrock also uses different spawn rules: at the default simulation distance, mobs only spawn 24 to 44 blocks away from the player. For Bedrock you need a design built for that edition.
Why are no Creepers spawning in my Creeper farm?
Usually the platform is still too bright, you’re standing too close (under 24 blocks) or too far away (over 128 blocks), there are lots of other dark areas such as caves nearby, or the difficulty is set to Peaceful. A 2-block-high space without trapdoors also lets Zombies and Skeletons take up the spawn slots.
How much gunpowder does a Creeper drop?
A Creeper drops 0 to 2 gunpowder, so one on average. With a Looting III sword the range goes up to 0 to 5. Only when a Skeleton shoots the Creeper do you also get a music disc.
Why do only Creepers spawn in the farm and not Zombies?
Under the trapdoor ceiling there’s only 1 13/16 blocks of headroom. A Creeper is 1.7 blocks tall in Java Edition and fits, while Zombies and Skeletons are almost 2 blocks tall and can’t spawn there. The carpet pattern keeps Spiders away.
Conclusion
In Java Edition, the Creeper farm from the video is still one of the easiest ways to get lots of gunpowder in version 26.3. The secret comes down to three things: a dark platform above the ocean, the trapdoor ceiling that only Creepers fit under, and an AFK spot high up so monsters don’t spawn anywhere else. Plan for plenty of trapdoors and take your time with the ceiling – after that, the chests almost fill themselves.
