Path Tracing for Minecraft Java: Nvidia's RTX Remix Explained
Nvidia has taught Minecraft Java Edition path tracing: with the new beta mod “RTX Remix for Minecraft,” light, shadows and reflections are calculated almost like in a movie. The mod appeared on GitHub on October 23, 2026, and Nvidia officially introduced it alongside RTX Remix 1.6 on October 28. Since then, YouTube and TikTok have been full of comparison videos showing sparkling water, glowing ice and light beams in the fog.
In short: The mod is free and open source, but it only runs on Windows PCs with an Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics card or newer, and only with Minecraft Java 1.21.1. It’s a beta from Nvidia, not an official Minecraft update. It isn’t available on console, tablet or phone.

What is path tracing, anyway?
Path tracing means the computer follows the path of light rays as they leave torches, the sun and lava, bounce off walls and end up in your eye. Regular Minecraft takes a shortcut. It only brightens blocks according to fixed rules, and there are hardly any shadows or reflections.
According to Nvidia’s announcement from October 28, 2026, the mod can, among other things:
- Show thousands of light sources, each with its own shadow, at the same time, like every torch in a cave,
- Calculate indirect light that bounces off surfaces up to four times, so a red block gives its surroundings a reddish tint,
- Display fog and light beams when the sun shines through leaves,
- Show reflections on water and smooth blocks, even of things outside the frame,
- Let light shimmer through ice and water, with light patterns on the bottom of lakes.
To keep all this running fast enough, Nvidia’s upscaling tech DLSS helps out. How good the result looks depends heavily on the resource pack. That’s why Nvidia includes its own materials pack with high-resolution textures. According to Nvidia, the mod should also work with other PBR packs, meaning textures that carry extra information about shininess and roughness.
Is this new? Bedrock already has RTX
The Bedrock Edition has had ray tracing since 2020, but the Java Edition hasn’t. Back then, Mojang and Nvidia released “Minecraft with RTX” for Windows, which only works with special RTX worlds and packs. Until now, Java players had to rely on shader packs that either only imitate path tracing or are built by fans. You can learn how to install packs like these in our guide to texture packs and shader packs.
What’s new about RTX Remix is that Nvidia itself is building a mod for Java and making the code public. Until now, RTX Remix was mostly known for old games like Portal or Half-Life 2. According to KitGuru, the Minecraft project is built on the Fabric mod loader, but compatibility with other Fabric mods isn’t guaranteed. We explain the difference between the two editions in Minecraft Bedrock vs. Java.
What do you need?
You need a Windows PC with an Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics card or newer and a purchased copy of Minecraft Java Edition. Here are the exact requirements according to Nvidia and the project page on GitHub:
- Graphics card: GeForce RTX 30, 40 or 50 with driver 616.92 or newer. Nvidia doesn’t list AMD or Intel cards.
- Operating system: Windows 10 or 11, x64 or ARM64. No Mac or Linux.
- RAM: 16 GB recommended.
- Storage: about 5 GB free during installation, about 3 GB afterward.
- Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21.1 on a Microsoft account.
If you have an older or less powerful graphics card, classic shaders are still your best option. You can squeeze out more frames per second with the right graphics settings or the performance mod Sodium.
How to install RTX Remix for Minecraft
Installation runs through a script that sets up Java 21, Fabric and the mod automatically. Nvidia describes it in these steps:
- Download the ZIP file (983 MB) from the GitHub page for version 0.1.0.
- Unzip it and run
install.bat. You choose either the Prism Launcher or the official Minecraft Launcher. - Download the demo world RTX Remix Showcase World and the pack RTX Remix Materials from CurseForge.
- Put the materials pack, still zipped, into the
resourcepacksfolder, and unzip the world into thesavesfolder. - Start the “NVIDIA RTX Remix for Minecraft” profile, turn on “RTX Materials Pack” under Resource Packs and open the “NVIDIA RTX Demo” world.
- Type
/rtx statusin chat. If “Render Initialized” and “SDK Available” both say “True,” everything is working.
The first launch takes longer because the mod is preparing shaders. If it stutters, lower your render distance or pick a lower preset in the RTX Remix settings. For a general look at how mod loaders like Fabric work, check out our article How to install Minecraft mods.
Tip: Go with the Prism Launcher. According to the instructions on GitHub, it creates a separate installation, so your normal worlds stay untouched. With the official launcher, on the other hand, the mod shares the game folder and worlds with your normal Minecraft.
What the beta can’t do yet
RTX Remix for Minecraft is clearly labeled as a beta with known bugs. On October 31, 2026, there were 44 open bug reports on GitHub. The developers themselves say that blocks, mobs and dimensions that don’t appear in the demo world are less fine-tuned and may look wrong or run slowly.
- Other mods: According to the project page, mods that change the graphics or how the world loads probably won’t work with RTX Remix. That’s likely to include performance mods like Sodium.
- Multiplayer: Works, but has been tested less than Singleplayer. Some features also need the mod on the server.
- Only one version: The mod only runs on 1.21.1. You shouldn’t open newer worlds with it, because older versions of Minecraft can’t cleanly handle newer worlds. When in doubt, make a backup first.
Why everyone’s talking about it
The trailer and the first comparison videos show how different Minecraft looks with real light, and that’s exactly what lots of people are sharing right now. Since late October, short clips with titles like “Path Tracing Has Been Added To Minecraft Java!” have been popping up on YouTube and TikTok. Hardware channels are testing how hard current graphics cards have to work to keep up.
Not everyone is impressed. In the comments, people are also poking fun at the materials pack from the trailer, which some think looks too smooth and not Minecraft-y enough. Because the code is open, though, fans can keep developing the mod themselves. After just over a week, the project has collected more than 600 stars on GitHub (as of October 31, 2026).
What parents should know
- Not an official update: The mod comes from Nvidia, not Mojang. It isn’t available on console, Switch, tablet or phone, and not in Bedrock on PC either.
- Expensive hardware: Without an Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics card or newer, nothing runs. If your kid asks for a new graphics card because they want “the Minecraft from the video”: most of the effects are nice to look at, but they aren’t needed to actually play the game.
- Only download from the official source: Fake mod downloads are a well-known way to spread malware. The real mod is only on Nvidia’s GitHub account; the world and materials pack are on CurseForge.
- Data sent to Nvidia: According to the project page, the RTX Remix runtime sends session info and crash reports to Nvidia by default. The mod itself doesn’t collect any data.
- Install it together: The installation touches folders like
%appdata%\.minecraft. Do it together, and back up your kid’s worlds beforehand. - Content unchanged: Nothing about the game itself changes, only how it looks. The age question stays the same as for regular Minecraft; read more in What age should kids start playing Minecraft?.
FAQ
What is RTX Remix for Minecraft?
RTX Remix for Minecraft is a mod from Nvidia that renders Minecraft Java Edition with path tracing: light, shadows, reflections and fog are calculated almost like in real life. It has been available on GitHub as a beta (version 0.1.0) since October 23, 2026, and it’s open source. It is not an official update from Mojang.
What graphics card do you need for path tracing in Minecraft Java?
According to Nvidia, a GeForce RTX 30 series card or newer with driver 616.92 or newer, plus Windows 10 or 11. 16 GB of RAM is recommended. Nvidia doesn’t list AMD or Intel graphics cards, and Macs and consoles aren’t supported.
Does RTX Remix work with the latest Minecraft version?
No. The beta only runs on Minecraft Java 1.21.1 with the Fabric mod loader. The current Java version is 26.3, so you shouldn’t open worlds from newer versions with it. The installer sets up its own profile.
Does RTX Remix for Minecraft cost money?
The download on GitHub is free, and the mod’s code is released under the Apache 2.0 license. You do need a purchased copy of Minecraft Java Edition and a compatible Nvidia graphics card, though. The demo world by Blockworks and Nvidia’s materials pack are free on CurseForge.
Is RTX Remix for Minecraft safe for kids?
The mod comes directly from Nvidia and is hosted on Nvidia’s official GitHub account. Only download it there, not from reupload sites. Good to know: by default, the RTX Remix runtime sends session data and crash reports to Nvidia. It’s best to install the beta together.
Bottom line
RTX Remix shows what Minecraft Java can look like with real light, and it’s free. For most kids, though, it’ll stay something cool to watch in videos: the mod won’t run without an Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics card or newer, and as a beta for an older version, it’s better for marveling at the demo world than for continuing to play in your own world. If you’d rather explore huge worlds yourself, Switzerland at 1:1 scale in Minecraft is another project that’s wowing a lot of people right now.
