What Can You Do on Hypixel, the Biggest Minecraft Server Ever?

If you know a little about Minecraft servers, you’ve almost certainly heard of Hypixel. The server at mc.hypixel.net has been considered the biggest Minecraft server in the world for years and holds two Guinness World Records. Here you’ll find out which game modes there are, whether Hypixel really is still number one in October 2026, which rules apply and whether the server is suitable for kids.

In short: Hypixel is a free minigame server for Java Edition with games like Bed Wars, SkyBlock, SkyWars and Murder Mystery. Is Hypixel still the biggest Minecraft server?

That depends on what you measure.

Records and history – Hypixel is ahead here:

• Guinness World Record “most popular Minecraft server network”: 64,533 concurrent players on July 7, 2017.
• Guinness World Record “most unique players logged into a Minecraft server”: 11,982,298 accounts (as of August 24, 2017).
• All-time peak: According to Wikipedia, Hypixel reached about 216,000 concurrent players on April 16, 2021 – during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Current player counts – it’s close in 2026: The survival PvP server DonutSMP has overtaken Hypixel at times. According to an analysis by minecraft-stats.fr, DonutSMP led on weekly averages every week from early January to late May 2026 – in February, for example, with about 44,400 players to 27,600. In early June, DonutSMP dropped by about half after a controversial update and a data loss, while Hypixel held steady.

According to LiveCounts, Hypixel passed DonutSMP again later that same day on September 24. So the lead changes depending on the time of day. On top of that, even DonutSMP’s own community wiki admits that a large share of its earlier peak of around 60,000 players came from bot accounts. Live numbers are therefore always just a snapshot.

Our own measurements: Since October 15, 2026, we’ve been checking the player counts of Hypixel, DonutSMP and other big servers ourselves every 30 minutes. At our latest check (October 21, 2026, 11:00 AM UTC), 17,218 players were online on Hypixel and 20,632 on DonutSMP. The chart and table update automatically.

Our verdict: Hypixel is the biggest Minecraft server of all time – with the highest documented records and more than twelve years at the top. But the server with the most players right now isn’t always Hypixel in 2026.

What is DonutSMP?

DonutSMP is a survival server for Java and Bedrock run by the streamer DrDonutt. According to its community wiki, it’s all about farming, a player economy, hunting down and raiding other players’ bases, and crystal PvP – the server’s wiki itself calls it “semi-anarchy”. Bases are often found and destroyed within days. That makes DonutSMP much less suitable for younger kids than Hypixel.

What can you do on Hypixel?

Hypixel is best known for its minigames. Game modes like Bed Wars or SkyWars existed before, but Hypixel made them especially popular, and many other servers have followed its lead. We explain what minigames actually are in What are Minecraft minigames?.

The most popular game modes

• Bed Wars – Teams gather resources, buy gear and protect their bed. As long as your bed is standing, you respawn after dying. The goal: destroy the other teams’ beds and be the last team left.
• SkyBlock – You start on a small floating island, build farms, collect items, explore islands, fight in dungeons and trade with other players. SkyBlock is more of a role-playing game of its own than a minigame and gets regular updates and events – in October 2026, for example, a Halloween event.
• SkyWars – Everyone starts on their own island, loots chests and fights until only one player is left.
• Murder Mystery – One player is secretly the murderer, one is the detective, and everyone else is innocent. It’s about suspense and logic rather than building skills.
• Build Battle – Everyone builds something on a theme in a short time, then everyone votes. Ideal for creative kids, with no fighting.
• Duels – 1v1 or team fights in lots of variations.
• Arcade Games – a collection of quick, fun party games.
• The TNT Games – for example TNT Run, where the floor disappears beneath your feet.

There are also classics like UHC Champions, Mega Walls, Blitz Survival Games, Cops and Crims and Turbo Kart Racers.

Which game modes suit kids?

Rules and anti-cheat

Hypixel has its own server rules plus separate SkyBlock rules, which you’ll find at hypixel.net/rules. The key points:

• Cheats and unfair mods are banned. Mods that only improve performance or appearance, for example, are allowed. Anything that gives you an advantage in the game – like seeing through walls or auto-clicking – gets you banned. Read more in our article on cheating.
• Hypixel’s anti-cheat is called Watchdog. It runs automatically in the background and bans cheaters, often with a delay in so-called ban waves.
• Real-money trading is forbidden: buying or selling SkyBlock coins, items or accounts for real money is punished – up to having your progress wiped. Offers like that are often scams, too.
• Treat others with respect: insults, harassment and scamming other players are not allowed.
• Your account, your responsibility: according to the terms of service, the account owner is responsible for making sure everyone who uses the account follows the rules. If a child shares the account with siblings, a ban applies to all of them.

How much does Hypixel cost?

Playing is free. You can pay for ranks (for example VIP or MVP) with cosmetic extras and convenience features. Payments go through the payment service Tebex. According to the terms of service, all purchases are final and non-refundable. For parents, that means: don’t save payment details in the browser, and talk about purchases together beforehand.

Is Hypixel suitable for kids?

The games themselves are harmless: no realistic violence, no forced gambling, and lots of modes without fighting. Hypixel’s terms of service don’t set an official minimum age. What parents should keep an eye on:

• Chat with strangers: People from all over the world play on Hypixel. In the Minecraft options under Chat Settings, you can set chat to “Commands Only” or hide it completely.
• No personal information: no real name, no school, no Discord or Instagram for people you don’t know.
• Don’t click links in chat, and don’t accept “free coins” or ranks from third parties – these are almost always scams aimed at the Minecraft account.
• Store and ranks: agree on rules beforehand.
• Start together: it’s more relaxed to play in a party with friends you know.

Alternatives for Bedrock and console

Hypixel only lets Java players in. If you play on a phone, tablet, Xbox, PlayStation or Switch, you’ll find similar minigames on The Hive or CubeCraft. Both are featured servers in Bedrock Edition and, according to LiveCounts on September 24, 2026, among the biggest Bedrock servers (about 10,400 and 11,500 concurrent players, respectively). 1. Start Minecraft Java Edition, ideally on the latest version.
2. Click Multiplayer → Add Server.
3. Enter mc.hypixel.net as the address and save.
4. Select the server and click Join Server.
5. In the main lobby, use the compass (game menu) to pick a game mode.

How did Hypixel get so big?

Hypixel launched in April 2013. Before that, the two founders had built adventure maps for Minecraft together and posted trailers for them on YouTube – at first, the server was mainly meant to show off those maps. The team bet early on its own network with powerful server clusters and regularly released game modes it had programmed itself. Reward systems, an active moderation team and ongoing updates, like those for SkyBlock, kept players on the server for the long run.

Hypixel and Hytale: The Hypixel team also gave rise to the standalone game Hytale from Hypixel Studios.
